The word "antibiotic" is derived from the Greek anti which means "against" and bios which means "life" (a bacterium is a life form). Antibiotics are potent medications that fight bacterial infections. If taken as prescribed, antibiotics can save lives. They either kill off microbes completely or prevent them from multiplying. Your body's natural defenses can normally take it from there. Most antibiotics have got two names, the brand name created by the manufacturer, and a generic name based on chemical properties of antibiotics. Antibiotics do not fight off viral infections, for instance colds, flu, most coughs and bronchitis, sore throats unless brought on by streptococcus. A broad-spectrum antibiotic can be taken to combat a wide number of infections. A narrow-spectrum antibiotic is only efficacious against a few types of germs. There are antibiotics that can kill off aerobic bacteria, while others work against anaerobic bacteria. Aerobic bacteria require oxygen, while anaerobic bacteria do not. Antibiotics may be precondition in advance, to prevent an infection, particularly before surgery. This is called 'prophylactic' use of antibiotics. They are normally used prior to bowel and orthopaedic operation. Antibiotics can bring on many more health problems, if they are not taken in the right way. Widespread use and misuse in sick people over time have jeopardized antibiotics' ability to fight off germs. These days, nearly all bacteria are antibitocs-resistant, so that more lately introduced antibiotics are sometimes needed to stop infections once easily cured. Antibiotics can also lead to complications, for instance vaginal yeast infections and diarrhoea. When you take antibiotics, observe the instructions. Your dose has been calculated to kill bacteria throughout the course of the disease. So, if you do not coating, you risk leaving enough germs in your body to resume the infection - even if you are feeling good. The leftover medication will not be enough to combat the microbes the next time, and it may even make them resistant to antibiotics. |
